Pattern

Reminds me of the kiepersol and the Stellenbosch logo. I feel I can use this for my foil prints

Exhale

Trying to...
Preparing some prints for an exhibition which will be curated by Grace Kotze. It is entitled 'Exhale' and the brief was to do something that allowed you to exhale, to let go and do what you want to.
I always feel as if I let go and immerse/lose myself when I start printing. I often start with one intention and then become transported and waylaid in the process. Very often I move too far ahead and lose contact with what I was trying to achieve.I probably need to be clearer about what I want to achieve and measure what I'm doing against what I want to achieve (i.e. 'proper' action research). Sometimes it is useful to play and brainstorm, but I probably need to be clearer about it and do it much more deliberately. This might be the difference between Art and Design.

Pyrite

Searching for fool's gold?!

A pair of earrings I thought I was doing for Liz Loubser's exhibition or Schmuck...

Am I a fool searching for 'gold' here? Am I searching for fool's gold? Do I want to fool the people with my jewels? Am I providing the 'fools' with gold?

Schmuck

How to make these beautiful objects wearable? And the link to book binding...

I realised that the red string could be added beautifully and sensibly, so that the marks/dots in the front are a reflection of something 'sensible' that happens at the back. Almost the way I suspect the Japanese might do it...

Desk

After self study exhibition ... the debris, from left to right (on the front end of the desk)

  • Ceramic test pieces
  • Fired beads on their kiln stands
  • A Zulu sandal (izimbadada)
  • Two Medal earrings
  • Two Jasmyn foil prints

Cameos

The next word in the glossary  ... it initially referred to cameo brooches and pendants that were carved from shell. Eventually the other meaning i.e. that of a 'brief appearance by a known person' became significant, alluding to the way that the same person plays the different roles of mother/lover/friend/servant/etc... in quick succesion... and always beautifully!

'Gedienstig' means 'subservient'....!

Birds

An installation featuring gold and silver bird pendants and metallic prints.

The prints are done on pages from Jane Eyre.

leaving lines on its wings, I say,
did you know that our fingerprints
fade as we age – they cross over first?

Silver birds morphing into fleur-de-lis type coupling devices... you know, the little bits that hold the bigger bits together... all displayed on logarithmic tables.

Kiepersol

The voluptuous leaves of this cabbage tree growing next to our verandah struck a chord in us and served as reference (or inspiration, as some would have it) for quite a few artworks...

a print...

the texture on a frame...

... enamelled pendants

silver pendants...

and as 'conversations'...

Skotnes

One of my final 'Skotnes' prints for Artspace. It is supposed to showtwo heads talking to each other and the lizard in between alludes to the 'shape' of conversations between two people... or is it the conversation between one's two halves?... I devloped the aluminium frames specially for these prints...

Skotnes framed

So many decisions are made while making something... Here I am trying to decide how much space the prints need around them... or what the implication is if there is seemingly too little of it.

Skotnes print

A Skotnes print busy happening. I am obviously happy with this one, which is why it is being captured... It is useful to look at a photo to see what it looks like... The photo provides a little more 'distance' so I can be less sujective...

Cross

A close-up of one of the previous prints This shows the red-tip detail a bit better... combining the Fleur-de-lis and the tab...

It also shows the latest Crusader cross design... where the 4 smaller crosses are separate...

Medals based on first idea

This edition revisits the original idea of using the red tip that shows where to peel the foil on a champagne bottle... I had run out of 'nice' foil so I used the original foils from when we used to drink more champagne... we now drink more red wine, which does not have the same golden-type foil... I think I should look for more foils to use underneath... more foil and more types of foil...

I am printing more editions so I can send a wide range of prints for Margie, of Africa Nove, to see for stock...

New edition of Medals

These prints were done on paper using the remnants/off-cuts of previously used prints. When printing onto foil, not all the pigment is transferred. I decided to print the remnants onto paper. It produces very interesting texture.

This edition is of a crusader cross. The photo has to be taken with the light and the reflection kept in mind.

Crusader Cross medals

Crusader crosses.

Here I have used a slightly larger format (15x10) so that the prints will fit in the photo album I'm using to store them... and to give me more space at the bottom - which is so intimidating to write in....

It is the first time using the silver side of the foil... because it had some adhesive stuck to the other side! and I think it has a more steely look/feel to it... a nice characteristic to have available when trying to describe someone..
