I recently found these worms eating a Halleria shrub in our garden...

I noticed their numbers started dwindling, so I caught one so I could see what it becomes... It buried itself and has now become a pupae...

White eye nest

A Cape white-eye has made a nest outside the lounge window and I hope I'll be able to see the chicks grow up and take off... Last year the chicks disappeared after a few days, presumably eaten by a snake. We keep the window shut, in case Skattebol, the cat, has them for lunch.

The Natal Robin has been very entertaining. I'm not sure if it is just showing off, but in one session yesterday, it mimiced a Fish eagle, a Piet-my-vrou (red chested cuckoo), a Toppie (black eyed bulbul) and a Southern boubou shrike...

The photo is not mine, I found it on Ricardo's blog. He saw it in Hluhluwe... The one in my garden is very shy and hides in the bush outside the kitchen. Imagine what it sounds like hearing a Fish Eagle at your back door!

The next word in the glossary ... it initially referred to cameo brooches and pendants that were carved from shell. Eventually the other meaning i.e. that of a 'brief appearance by a known person' became significant, alluding to the way that the same person plays the different roles of mother/lover/friend/servant/etc... in quick succesion... and always beautifully!

'Gedienstig' means 'subservient'....!

Working out how to display the 'conversations'. Here the display, consisting of a PCboard Crusader cross and a 'medal', is on top of old patternmaking paper with all the beautiful folds and creases (adding texture). The label at the bottom adds to the layout and the organised (male?) feeling of the display.

I used sawing exercise, done by 1st year applicants, and embossed the litho plate that I want to use for making frames for my prints. The idea is to do multiple prints onto the same plate... so this is really just step one...

Sarah Rhodes, who is doing her PhD came for a visit and I took her to Grey Street to see the beaders market and then took a detour via Madressa Arcade... one of our favourite places in Durban... Here she is standing in front of the shop of 'Inchebe' the bearded Muslim trader that I became acquanted with when I started doing beadwork, a long time ago. Most of the Zulu women buy their beads from him.

He imports his beads from Checkoslovakia in solid wooden boxes (used to) and I bought them from him to use as furniture when I stayed at the back of SHane's house, when Kim and I seperated.

It was at the time of the rugby world cup and I became friendly with his younson who loved chatting about the Springboks... I saw him today and he is a grown man with a long beard... scary how old I've grown...
